Wildlife Film Academy

Learn the art of wildlife filmmaking in South Africa.  This intensive one-month course offers lectures by industry professionals, includes a month in a game reserve, and each student produces their own unique five-minute short film. 

The Wildlife Film Academy is based at Untamed Africa, a concession in the south of the Kruger National Park, it seeks to inspire and inform aspiring filmmakers by providing a variety of skills essential to making original and appealing wildlife films. The one month course is divided into 3 parts:

The first part of the course focuses on theory-based lectures and includes finding out what Commissioning Editors, Broadcasters and Distributers want; conceptualising and developing a storyboard; handling of camera equipment, from HDV cameras to large rigs; fundamentals of location sound to the latest HD technology; creating a sequence and tips on choosing a soundtrack.  It also includes an essential business component, thus equipping students to deal with the tough business side of the wildlife filmmaking industry.

In the second part of the course students are accompanied by an experienced filmmaker and a game ranger, and taken on early morning and evening game drives to capture the footage for their film. This is the exciting part, where they can watch their storyboards come alive.

The final part of the course concentrates on the post-production and editing of the film. With raw footage in hand, students digitize and edit their own footage in individually assigned editing suites under the tutorage of post-production experts. At the end of the course students will have successfully produced a broadcast quality 5 minute short film, with final mix of voice-over narration and soundtracks.
