What’s the deal?

At Monkeyland, you are offered an unforgettable experience; the experience of a living forest. A world first, you will experience what it is like to walk freely among a forest inhabited by various species of primates. Leave the boring experience of viewing animals behind bars in the past and step into the future of wildlife interaction. This primate sanctuary offers you the chance to walk through 12 hectares of indigenous forest, seeing the animals living natural lives in a natural habitat setting, unhindered by the restrictions other captive animals experience.

When is the best time to do it?

You may visit Monkeyland primate sanctuary throughout the year, weather permitting. The best time to see the primates and forest is in the spring and summer months when the weather is warm and the rain scarce.

• Wear comfortable clothing suitable to the season
• Wear comfortable footwear suitable for an hour’s walk

Primate species:

Primate species housed at Monkeyland in Plettenberg Bay originate from all over the world, from places such as Asia, South America and Madagascar. The sanctuary is home to around 400 primates, some of which are:

• 3 species of lemur
• Gibbons
• Spider monkeys
• Capuchin monkeys
• Squirrel monkeys
• Miniature monkeys
• Langurs
• Vervets

About our efforts:

Monkeyland works hand in hand with Touch a Monkey’s Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization. The primate sanctuary offers a secure future to all its inhabitants and Touch a Monkey’s Heart Foundation is the sole custodian of every single primate that calls our forest home. Monkeyland is self-funded, raising the necessary funds though responsible eco-tourism. We encourage visitors to stop in at our well-stocked curio shop before leaving so that you can take something home to remember us by and in so doing, contribute to the efforts and future of the sanctuary.

Indemnity:

Each visitor enters Monkeyland primate sanctuary at her or her own risk.

Monkeyland is a wildlife sanctuary and the animals housed within are wild and roam freely, they are not restricted or fenced in, away from the humans that enter their habitat.

Upon entering Monkeyland, you agree to an indemnity and to obey the oders given by management and/or your guide at all times to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

The indemnity includes (but is not restricted to) the loss of or damage to personal items, illness, injury, harm or death (however caused).

Itinerary:

Monkeyland offers guests’ hour guided walking safaris through the primate sanctuary. During these guided walking safaris your guide will point out, identify and offer explanations on various aspects of forest life, primate species and conservation. Our aim is to raise public awareness through responsible eco-tourism and to educate our guests on the threats facing our closest living relatives and what everyone can do to help preserve the world we share with them.

You will leave the primate sanctuary with a better understanding of the animals we care for and a lasting memory of an unforgettably unique wildlife interaction experience.

A highlight of the walking safari tours is the crossing of Africa’s longest suspension bridge. Measuring 128m, this rope bridge spans a canyon above the canopy of the forest, treating you to a bird’s eye view of the forest and the animals that call it home.

The primates of Monkeyland are given a second chance at a natural, free and happy life. You will observe them, not as lifeless, captive animals but as free-roaming wild animals going about their natural lives. You will get to see them as they are meant to be seen: free, wild and unhindered by the presence of man.

Monkeyland offers guests the opportunity to enjoy lunch at our Blue Monkey Café, complete with a spacious, sunny deck. Enjoy a scrumptious meal in the unique ambiance of the surrounding forest.

The restaurant offers various delicious food options that range in price from R25 – R54 for adults as well as kiddies and desert selections.
