What is this upper Zambezi canoeing adventure?

Canoeing on the upper Zambezi River is an unforgettable experience that showcases the unspoilt beauty of Africa. There is no Dam controlling the flow of the upper Zambezi River, allowing the water to be subject to seasonal changes. There are also many islands in this part of the river, making the Adventure Zone’s canoe trails all the more interesting.

Why should you choose canoeing on the upper Zambezi River?

Canoeing on the upper Zambezi River with Adventure Zone offers participants the opportunity to view various wildlife and bird species in their natural habitat. Animals sighted often include elephants, impala, kudu, buffalo, crocodiles, hippos and many more. There are also at least 50 species of common birds found along the canoe trails making them a birder’s paradise. For some excitement there are also a few rapids along the way but don’t worry because they don’t go above grade 2 which is only the second easiest classification.

What’s the deal?

Choose from our available Adventure Zone canoe trails on the upper Zambezi River for an unforgettable experience and a chance to get up close and personal with the beauty of Africa. Wildlife and birdlife are abundant along the way, the scenery is breathtaking and there are even some small grade 2 rapids along the way.

Where is it?

The Upper Zambezi Canoe Trail takes place in Zimbabwe on a stretch of 15km of the Zambezi River situated above the majestic Victoria Falls. This stretch of the river runs between the entrance of the National Park and the Chundu Campsite.

When is the best time to do it?

The nest time to enjoy canoeing on the upper Zambezi River is from November, the start of the wet season. Flooding peaks around April and May, making those the very best months to take to the water. During this time the rising water level opens new channels, offering different routes throughout the season.

Available Canoe Trails:

Half Day Canoe Safari:

This canoe adventure offers participants between 1.5 and 2 hours of canoeing on the water. They are only available in the mornings.

Full Day Canoe Safari:

This canoe adventure offers participants between 1.5 and 2 hours of canoeing on the water in the morning and in the afternoon again.

Overnight Camping Canoe Safaris:

Various options are available including:

2 days and 1 night
2 days and 2 nights
3 days and 2 nights

Please note that these canoe safari adventures are only available one a pre-booked basis and are largely dependant on the water level of the river. Minimum participants for the overnight canoe safari adventures are 4.

Restrictions and Guidelines:

Half and full day canoe safari adventures:

Minimum number of participants is 2.
Maximum number of participants is 20.
Adventure Zone is able to accommodate larger groups upon request and then only by using both canoes and inflatable rafts.
Minimum age is 10 years
No maximum age applicable

Canoeing safaris on the upper Zambezi River may not be available from December to March (the rainy season) as heavy rainfall can prevent vehicle access to the canoe put in and take out points.
