The Best Surf Spots Around
If you are going to go surfing in Mossel Bay, it is well worth knowing where to go to catch the best waves and get the best vibe so here is the low down on the best surf spots around.
Inner Pool
Located at the Point, Inner Pool is the locals playground. The peeling is great, the top-to-bottom wave 9or hotdog wave) is consistent, which means you can pull almost any good maneuver on it.
Everyone flourishes here, from the rising stars to the surfing legends of Mossel Bay.
Works best: 3-5ft Pushing tide SW winds
Outer Pool
Outer Pool is famous for the length of the ride and the barrel at the bottom section. While the weathered, gutsy and most experienced surfers love the left, the right of Outer Pool is the most popular route to travel.
Outer Pool is the perfect bigger brother to Inner Pool and is rated the best, most consistent wave not only in Mossel Bay but also one of the best in South Africa too.
Works best: 3-5ft Low tide SW winds
Mystery Reef
This is the local big wave zone, but it is unique in that it can handle any size swell. On smaller days the perfect S-frame peak can be surfed but the bigger the better.
Not for the faint of heart when the swell get working.
Works best: 6ft plus High Tide SW Winds
Ding Dang
Moving along the coast, next up is the classic and old favorite Ding Dang. Given a perfect day you have two great options to choose from. You can either get a nice hollow barreling left from this A-frame barreling wave or long right walls to rack up some practice on.
Ding Dang, delivers the goods.
Works best: 3-6ft High Tide SW winds
Diaz Beach
Diaz Beach is the place to be for all beginners because there is a nice variety of waves to prevent overcrowding and there are no rocks. This is where you can get some great practice in for balance, pop-up and your first few maneuvers.
Works best: 2-5ft High Tide NW winds
Bayview
A late eighties hit, Bayview can still be a hit with the waves on the right day.
Bayview waves form off the reef, throwing perfect peaks left and right onto sand bottoms. The only drawback is that the waves are very easily affected by the afternoons South Westerly wind, instantly making them choppy.
Hartenbos River Mouth
Hartenbos River Mouth works great on days when there is a south easterly swell that is very hollow, so you need to know what you are doing if you are going to tackle these waves.
Dana Bay
If you are brave, then Dana Bay offers the waves for you. Deep water often makes surfers and swimmers uncomfortable but the wave quality is to die for. Dana Bay waves work best with medium to small swell and a bonus aspect is that the waves are prevented from closing out by the currents. So get out there and enjoy.
