The Race Day in detail
Extensive driver and safety briefing
The Platinum Event focuses heavily on safety while offering you and your clients the ride of your lives.
Introduction to the racing cars
These are real racing cars with different consoles to normal road cars; drivers need to thoroughly familiarize themselves with the cars.
Sighting laps
Drivers need to get used to the track and as such are taken on sighting laps to get used to the track. In this section, we extend the driver training and explain the racing line, brake points, turn-in points, apexes, and corner exits.
Getting kitted up
Safety and comfort enhances the overall experience of each driver. On the Day of the event, each driver is supplied with a balaclava, helmet, gloves, racing overalls and racing boots.
Seat fitting
This is the proverbial moment of truth, that moment that each driver at the event has been eagerly awaiting. It is time to get in behind the wheel of a world-class single-seat race car. As each driver is differently sized, a driver must be fitted into the car to ensure that they are able to drive comfortably and safely.
Please Note
There is a height and weight restriction for the cars.
- Height restriction: 1.95 meters (6ft4in)
- Weight restriction: 140kgs (22 stone)
Racing
You cannot drive a racecar without confidence. Drivers build confidence behind the wheel with warm up laps behind a pace car, learning the ropes safely.
Once up to speed, literally, drivers receive four 15-minute sessions. Now, that may not seem like a long time to many but that is a long time ion a racecar. Between their sessions drivers have the opportunity to rest, rehydrate and to receive training. This is also the opportune time to reflect on their performance and in order to better it in their next session.
The Cars
The cars driven are genuine racecars built by Reynard. Reynard constructed the Original F! Honda Bar cars built for the feeder series to Camp Cars in the United States. These racecars are fully race configured with specially tuned V6 Dodge engines that offer you all the raw horsepower of a racecar with the safety a novice can handle. Each car has a carbon fiber chassis, built to FIA safety standards and pulling 450 BHP/per ton.
The Race Tracks
There are currently four different tracks available for this exciting event, one in Cape Town and three in Johannesburg.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg offers three circuit options, depending on availability.
Kyalami
Kayalami offers nothing less than an excellent racing circuit that offers even the weathered pros a challenge. This track is located halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria/Tswane, in Midrand. It is an easy to get to classic. [www.kyalamiracing.co.za]
Westbank
While Kayalami offers history Westbank offers you a more modern racing taste with its large oval banked track that caters to the American racing style. Westbank circuit allows racers to experience thrilling straights followed by tight sections leading into enormous flowing turns. The Westbank track is located close to the Johannesburg International Airport, which is ideal for both international and regional visitors alike. [www.WesBankraceway.co.za]
Zwartkops
Just as Kayalami, Zwartkops is located in Midrand, between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In terms of length, the Zwartkops circuit is a small track, but it has no shortcomings in terms of racing challenge. The Zwartkops track is the easier track to learn in one day and this is ideal for the one day Platinum Event. It is also well worth noting that the Zwartkops track offers fantastic entertainment facilities, making it a favorite. [www.zwartkops.co.za]
Additional useful information
Weather
It is the responsibility of the host to ensure that all events are safe. The material safety of the racecars is affected by weather; wet weather in particular. It may be necessary to cancel the event due to safety reasons in the event of heavy rain or even, on occasion, damp conditions. As a result of this, Adventure Bookings is required to consider the possible conditions and weather forecast when booking events on order to avoid running the risk unnecessary cancellations.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg enjoys paradoxical weather conditions, dry winters and wet summers. This means that Joburg winters are ideal, sunny with very little risk of rain, for motor racing. Johannesburg summers traditionally enjoy summer afternoon rains, for this reason events booked for summer start early so that the racing is completed before the rain catches up with us.
Clothing
One of the number one questions we are always asked is what clothing the racers should wear or bring with. While we provide all the racing gear, we suggest attendees bring or wear the following:
- Running (sports) shoes
- Socks
- Shorts
- T-shirts
- Jersey in winter
- Cap (for sun protection)
Safety at the track
Safety is the number one priority at any of the events that Adventure Bookings organizes. All participants must attend extensive driver and safety briefings before the event, which all events have. In addition to this, there are medically trained marshals at the racetrack and an ambulance on stand by, just in case, one can never be too careful.
