What is the Gold Oyster Catcher Adventure Hiking Trail?

The Gold Oyster Catcher hiking trail takes place on the Western Cape’s southern coastline in the Boggomsbaai area. You are taken on a visual and historical tour of the area on foot and you will view much of the indigenous flora and fauna found along the coast. Accommodation and meals are included in the cost of the hiking trail and you will always be accompanied by an experienced and qualified guide.

This is the perfect adventure getaway for the avid hiker, fitness fanatic, nature enthusiast and history boffin. You will be staying in 4-star quality accommodation along the route, visit historic relics such as Russian war ship wreckage and you will see the Oyster catchers that the trail is names for. Enjoy the fresh air, away from the hustle and bustle of the city as you take in the natural beauty of South Africa and it’s coastline.

Gold Oyster Catcher Adventure Hiking Trail Itinerary:

Day 1:

Arrival days are on either a Tuesday or a Sunday.
Drive yourself to Mossel Bay or fly in to George Airport where a representative will meet with you and you will be transferred to your first night’s accommodation.
Welcome drinks are served at around 17:30.
Enjoy dinner at King Fisher which offers a beautiful setting on the coast.
Overnight for the first night in Mossel Bay at a local hotel or apartments.

Day 2:

Today holds a 15km hike in store.
After breakfast take a walk to the starting point of the Oyster Catcher Trail which is located at the historical St Blaize Cave.
GPS coordinates for the starting point of the trail: 34°11’11.58”S 22°09’21.42”E
Take a meandering hike along the cliffs and along contour paths to Dana Bay, pass over the Pinnacle Point golf estate along the way.
Optional visit: Stone age caves and swimming in the rock pools.
You will be picked up at Dana Bay and transported from there to your overnight stay at the Sandpiper cottages, situated in Boggomsbaai.

Day 3:

Today holds a 12km hike in store.
After breakfast you will be transported back to Dana Bay where you continue the guided hike to Boggomsbaai.
The hike takes you along a beautiful beach where Oystercatchers feed and make their nests.
Seasonal whale sightings are frequent between June and October annually. You may also be lucky enough to spot dolphins playing in the surf.
Visit the ancient Khoi San middens in the dunes.
Arrive at the Sandpiper centre around mid afternoon.
Welcome drinks and snacks are served on arrival.
Hikers have the opportunity to relax at the Leisure Centre and Spa, the heated indoor pool.
Massages are available by arrangement.
There is a pre dinner talk and or video on the Black Oystercatcher.
Enjoy dinner by candle light at the Sandpiper Leisure Centre.
Overnight at Sandpiper or similar accommodation.

Day 4:

Today holds a 15km hike in store.
After breakfast begins the hike along the beach and rocky shore line to the historical Fransmanshoek which is where the French war ship, La Fortune, sank in 1763.
Enjoy a beach lunch and some snorkeling and swimming in the calm, secluded bay.
After lunch continue hike along the coast to Kanon.
Take a walk up the great sand dunes. This is an optional activity for the fitter hikers.
Transfer to your overnight accommodation.
Dinner is prepared and enjoyed.

Day 5:

After breakfast you depart to Kanon.
Continue the hike to the Gouritz River from Kanon Village.
Enjoy a boat trip across the Gouritz River.
Take a return transfer to Boggomsbaai which is followed by a farewell champagne brunch at the Sandpiper Leisure Centre.

Transfer to either the George Airport or to Mossel Bay.
