Take the opportunity to enjoy 3 days of assisted camping in the beauty of the Namib-Naukluft National Park and to experience the dunes of Sossusvlei. This adventure holiday is perfect for getting a “snap shot” experience of Namibia. Prices are inclusive of virtually everything you will need on this holiday, leaving you little worry about and lots of exploring to do!

Where is it?

What to bring:

Please Note: The majority of the camping equipment for this adventure holiday can be hired by prior arrangement; you don’t need to bring your own or to go out to buy any if you don’t have your own equipment.

Additional Namibian adventure holiday information:

Comprehensive personal travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Camping:

• The tents used are dome type and easily assembled.
• The mattresses provided are approximately 5 cm thick.
• Each participant is provided with a camp chair with backrest
• The recommended sleeping bag range is “3 – 4 season” (can be hired)

Meals:

• All your evening meals (unless stipulated) are cooked by your safari guide on an open fire.
• Salads and fresh vegetables are served where it is possible. Please Note in some areas this is not necessarily each day.
• Fresh fruit is supplied when and where possible.
• We are able to cater for vegetarians by prior arrangement

Restrictions:

• Each participant is limited to the following on this camping adventure holiday:
• A sleeping bag
• 1 medium sized camera bag
• 1 medium sized hand luggage bag
• 1 soft, barrel type bag (maximum weight of 15kg)
• Tours depart for a minimum of 2 and a max of 14 participants

Malaria:

Namibia presents a low malarial risk, however it is recommended that you seek professional medical advice so that you can make an informed decision about preventative medications.

Drinking Water:

All the tap water available in Namibia has been purified or comes directly from boreholes. Therefore all tap water is safe to drink.  We supply participants with tap drinking water; bottled mineral water is available at shops.

Electricity:

• Namibian electrical plugs are 220 V and are 3 pin (round pin, not square pin).
• You can purchase adaptors in Windhoek.
• Some if the campsites offer the opportunity to recharge batteries.

Currency:

• The Namibian Dollar (N$) is permanently equal to the ZAR ( N$1 – R1)
• South African Rand is legal tender in Namibia.

Itinerary:

Scheduled adventure holiday departures are guaranteed every Tuesday of the year, providing that there are a minimum of 2 participants.

Tuesday: Windhoek – Namib Desert Camp, outside of the Namib Naukluft Park (350 km) (LD) (camping)

You will be collected between 08:00 & 08:30

We travel out over the Eros Mountains and along scenic roads, on our way south-west to the desert.  We also pass over part of the Naukluft Mountains the Khomas Hochland range on our journey today and head down from Namibia’s central plateau by way of the beautiful Remhoogte Pass. 

Coming out of the mountains we reach open plains and from here it is only a short distance to our next stop, the tiny town of Solitaire.  We will stop here for some refreshments before continuing on through desert scenery.

We cross some open grass savannah and farmlands before the terrain begins to give way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib.  We aim to arrive at our camp during the late afternoon and watch the colours glow and change on distant mountains to the east.

Wednesday: Namib Desert Camp – Sossusvlei - Namib Desert Camp, outside of the Namib Naukluft Park (camping) (BLD)

A pre dawn start is essential this morning as we want to catch the soft light of the sunrise on the desert. After passing through Sesriem, the gateway to the dunes and driving into the heart of the dune field, we reach Sossusvlei itself by walking the last 5 km through the dunes. 

The walk is like nothing else, in the cool of the morning, with soft sunlight just beginning to play over the dunes creating a sharp light and shadow contrast across the whole desert.

Ancient mineral pans, stunted camel thorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or maybe an ostrich make the photo opportunities perfect. 

We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei, also visiting dune 45, and as the day wears on we return to Sesriem for lunch to escape the heat of the afternoon.  As the day cools off in the late afternoon we will take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon.

Thursday: Namib Desert Camp - Windhoek (450 km) (BL)

After breakfast we begin our journey, over the mountains and along scenic roads, back to Windhoek.  We will travel back by different roads, this time climbing up to Windhoek and travelling by way of the massive Gamsberg Pass in the Khomas Hochland Mountain Range on our way back to civilization.

We are due back into the city around 16:00 and you will be dropped off at your accommodation on our return.
