What Horses are used?
The horses that are used need to be of hardy stock, well acclimatized, schooled and willing to go the distance. That is why we use mainly mixed breed horses; we combine Basotho, Boerperd and Arab lines. The combination produces horses that can handle the mountainous terrain and the South African climate.
The horses used for the four-day adventure over the Drakensberg Mountains live a varied lifestyle and thus are well schooled, making them willing trail horses. All the horses used for this trail were born in the surrounding area, making them sure footed on the mountain trails undertaken on these adventures.
The saddles used are a mixture of trail and English style saddles and all tack and equipment used on the trail is maintained regularly to ensure the safety and comfort of both horses and riders. Head protection is provided and it is strongly advised that you make use of it at all times while on the Drakensberg trail.
