The Drakensberg Canopy Tour®
The canopy tour concept grew out of a need of scientists studying the ecology of the uppermost levels of the rain forests in Costa Rica. Similar non-invasive commercial systems are now operated in indigenous forests all over the world.
Drakensberg Canopy Tour® is one of the five Canopy Tours® in South Africa and is situated in the Blue Grotto valley on the property of the Drakensberg Sun Hotel in the KZN Central Drakensberg. The environmentally sensitive manner in which the Tour has been developed respects this Afro-Montane forest in its 10,000 year old state. The forest is home to over 150 species of birds including the rare Bush Blackcap which is endemic. The inspiring views of the majestic Drakensberg, the ancient indigenous forest, waterfalls and the cascading stream make this a highlight of any nature-lover’s experience.
The Drakensberg Canopy Tour® consists of 12 platforms magically constructed in trees and on cliff faces, and takes you on an unforgettable adventure as you slide along a series of steel cables suspended above the forest floor. The Drakensberg Canopy Tour® starts with a safety briefing and demonstration at our reception, after which you are kitted up with a full body harness, pulley, gloves and safety helmet. The group is then transported in an open vehicle to the start of the Tour. From the moment you launch off the first platform, a new world unfolds as you slide on the cables across to the next viewpoint. At each platform we encourage you to enjoy the view while your guide points out interesting facts and features about the surrounding ecology.
Two professional guides escort all groups at all times. Your safety is paramount and there are strict procedures in place to ensure that you are constantly connected to either the cable or the platform. Many people are nervous about the prospect of their first Canopy Tour® and some are just plain scared of heights. For those who don't think they can do it on their own, we offer a tandem tour which allows you to take in the whole experience while safely attached to a guide who controls your speed and ensures your safety.
The Drakensberg Canopy Tour® is not very physically demanding and appeals to a broad spectrum of the population. A minimum level of fitness is required for the walk out of the forest up to the collection point. This is not an average outing, but an adventurous exploration of normally inaccessible aspects of the forest and will absorb your full attention.
Drakensberg Canopy Tour® is a fun and safe eco-adventure accommodating single individuals, couples and groups. The tour experience is excellent for team building and bringing people together in a different and exciting setting. The experience lasts approximately three and a half hours and costs R450 per person and includes all equipment, guides, transport, refreshments and a light meal.
If you have a bucket list the Drakensberg Canopy Tour needs to be on it. It will remind you that you are alive because nature is.
