From May to July of every year, on the Mboyti River Lodge in the Transkei, South Africa, the Sardine Run takes place. What is the Sardine Run? It is nothing short of spectacular annual event that has occurred for thousands of years. As countless millions of sardines prepare for their northward migration, the oceans top predators wait for this all-you-can-eat buffet. There are two ways that one can experience the Sardine Run in South Africa; either dive into the chaos or remain on board your boat as a spectator. Whichever way you choose, you will see an abundance of marine life such as whales, sharks, dolphins; orcas and gannets and of course billions of Sardines that make up the Greatest Shoal on Earth!
So what are the specifics? We will supply a full day on our boat until the mid afternoon. This is of course, permitting decent weather. Two meals will be provided per day and snacks will be available on the boat. You will be sharing a cosy accommodation as well. To get to and from the action, we will provide a dedicated micro-light pilot, equipped with a VHF radio to inform us of the action wherever it may be. For those who will be diving, air fills, cylinder and weight belts will be made available.
What would you need to bring? Please come ready with a decent mask, snorkel and fins. A 5mm wetsuit will also be needed. Splash jackets, scuba equipment (as needed), sun block, sunglasses, a hat and some light entertainment will also go down well. We include the weight belts, a cylinder, air fills plus of course, the boats. These boats are eight metres long and fully equipped with all the latest safety features and two-way radios.
Please note that for the diver, there is an optional DAN Insurance for all dive related accidents, - It will not cover any out of water activities, and will be in duration for the entire length of the tour. It is also important to note that there are no refunds for days when there is no launch; instead alternate activities will be arranged in case of poor weather during the Sardine Run.
