Sandboarding is cool, that is simple fact. You don’t need to be a super athlete to start out; all you really need is a handy desert or a good sized sand dune, usually near a beach, but inland often have some great sand dunes as well.
All you really need are sand dunes, a specially polished sandboard and loads of enthusiasm. There are many outfits that offer basic sandboarding instruction plus board hire, which makes this an even greater adventure as you don’t have to invest in horribly expensive equipment. Another perk of sandboarding is that if you can snowboard, then you can sandboard and visa versa.
South Africa is blessed with sand dunes, not only along its very long coastline but also inland. There are ample sandboarding sand dunes all along the coast and of course places like Jeffrey’s Bay, Betty’s Bay and of course Cape Town is well-known for their great sandboarding spots. Johannesburg has Mount Mayhem that is brilliant for doing air tricks. Of course if you want the desert, then Southern Africa does not disappoint at all with the Kalahari and Namib desert on hand.
Oh, and always remember, sandboarding is not only great fun, it is an acknowledged sport; the sandboarding world championships are held in July each year at Monte Kaolina in Germany, so tell that to anyone that thinks sandboarding isn’t on par with all the other board sports.
