Health

When you do your booking, you must advise us of the following:

Vaccinations

There are no legally prescribed vaccinations required for any of the countries we will visit on this overland adventure tour.

Malaria

You will require Malaria prophylactics for the duration of this tour so please discuss the matter with your GP well in advance.

Visas

Visas are crucial travelling documents and some nationalities require visas to enter Mozambique and Swaziland. It is your responsibility to obtain the necessary visas before your departure on this overland tour.

Climate

Africa has a harsh climate when compared to many other countries around the world. Sunburn and dehydration should always be taken seriously. You should always wear a hat and bring sunscreen of Factor 30 and higher with you and drinking 3 litres of water per day is recommended.

Currency and Banking

Travelling in Africa means you need to provide cash for transactions and South African Rand is the most common currency along the route we take. US dollars and be used to pay for any optional activities. Remember that travellers� cheques are time consuming to try and exchange and the fees are prohibitively high. Drawing cash from ATMs in Mozambique can be problematic as the machines often do not work, especially in remote areas. Make sure you have small denomination notes as traders are not keen to accept large denomination notes.

Local Payment

 

The local payment must be paid in cash to the guide when you depart on your overland adventure tour. It is to cover the Dhow excursion on the tour and only small denomination notes, $5 to $50, printed after 2002 will be accepted.

Onward Travel

For tour group members that wish to extend their African adventures, this tour can easily be linked with other tours with other tours with a flight to Nairobi. It works especially well with the Masai Mara and Gorilla tour as well as the Serengeti and Zanzibar Trek.

Pre and Post Tour Accommodation

If you wish us to arrange accommodation for you for before this tour starts as well as for afterwards, we will do so on request.

Arrival and Departure

Every last detail of this overland adventure tour is planned, but unforeseen problems such as the weather and local road conditions can create problems. All tour group members are strongly advised to plan their arrival to be one day ahead of the start of the tour and to book their departure flights for one day after the official end of the tour. This will give ample time for any problems that may crop up.

Green Seats � Making Africa Greener

It is possible to purchase a �green seat� and thereby offset your carbon footprint during this tour. Please discuss the matter when you do your booking or with your guide upon your arrival.

Take Note

All information should be deemed a guideline as travelling times and accommodation may have to be changed without prior notice due to road conditions and adverse weather changes.

Changes to accommodation in the Kruger National Park may also be necessary as we follow where the game moves to, so as to ensure the best game spotting opportunities for all tour group members.

  • Kruger National Park, South Africa: 3-hour sunset game drive and 2-3 hour dawn game walk.
  • Johannesburg, South Africa: dinner at local restaurant
  • Inhambane, Mozambique: scuba diving and snorkelling

Itinerary

Day 1/2 Swaziland � Hlane Royal National Park

We leave Johannesburg early as the journey on the first day of our overland trip is 450 km. we travel through Mpumalanga and leave South Africa and enter Swaziland through the Mananga border posts. Our destination is the Hlane Royal National Park and we hope to do excellent game spotting as the park has elephant, lion and white rhino to name a few.
Optional activities: lion tour, game drive, hiking and mountain biking.

Our overnight accommodation for 2 nights is the Hlane Royal NP camp site with lunch, dinner and breakfast on 2nd morning included. Facilities at the camp: shared ablutions with hot showers, but no electricity.

Day 3/4 Mozambique � Praia Do Tofo

Today we hang a long journey of 600 km and we leave Swaziland through the Lomahasha border post and enter Mozambique through the Namaacha border post. �The journey to our destination, Praia Deo Tofo takes us through some very beautiful stretches of coast. We will stay over for 2 nights a Praia do Tofo and you can chose to simply relax on the clean white sand beaches or partake of the many activities on offer.

Optional activities: scuba diving, snorkelling and surfing.

Our overnight accommodation is the Fatima�s Nest Campsite with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. There is also a bar and shared ablution facilities.

Day 5/6/7 Vilanculos - Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a protected marine area with truly spectacular reefs and sealife. People flock to snorkel and scuba dive here and it is easy to see why. Today we travel 330 km from Praia do Tofu to Vilankulo to reach over overnight destination.

Our accommodation is at the Vilankulo Campsite with all meals included. Facilities include shared ablutions with hot showers.

Included activity is the Dhow Excursion and optional activities include horse riding and snorkelling.

Overnight Dhow Excursion

We sail from Vilanculo to Magaruque Island on board a traditional Dhow and swim, snorkel and have lunch there. In the afternoon we sail to the mainland where we overnight at Chigamane Camp.

On the 2nd day we set sail for 2-Myle Reef for some stunning snorkelling and scuba diving.� After a full day of sun, fun and sea we return aboard the Dhow to Vilanculo where we again overnight at the Vilanculo campsite.

Take note that if the weather is unfavourable our plans will change to a safari and speedboat trip with a day trip on a Dhow to Magaruque and a speedboat transfer to 2 Mile Reef on the 2nd day.

Day 8/9 Inhambane

Today we travel 300 km from Vilankulo to Inhambane where we will stay for 2 nights. Imhambane has huge variety to offer guests from pristine beaches to sight seeing and much more.

Optional activities: boat cruise, snorkelling, quad biking and fishing.

Our accommodation is dorm rooms in the Pensao Practica Hostel that offer shared ablutions and overlooks the bay.

Day 10 Maputo

Today our overland adventure journey takes us to the capital city of Mozambique, Maputo
Included activities: city tour to see the Fort of Nossa Senhora de Conceiaro and the Central Railway Station as we explore the city. Optional activity is having dinner out at an excellent seafood restaurant.

Our overnight accommodation is at Fatima�s Backpackers in dorms and facilities include shared ablutions with hot showers. Breakfast and lunch is included.

Day 11/12 Timbavati Area

Today our road trip of 200 km will take us back into South Africa and we exit Mozambique and enter South Africa through the Lebombo border posts. Our destination is the world-famous Kruger National Park and our aim is game spotting with the hope of seeing the Big 5. We will spend two nights and pack in as many wildlife experiences as possible.
Included activities: evening village tour and fire dancing exhibition. Optional activities include night time game drive and dawn game walks in the company of a ranger.

Our accommodation for 2 nights will be at the Marula Camp with all meals included. Facilities at the camp include a swimming pool and bar and there are shared ablutions.

Day 13 Timbavati Area

Today we go into the greater Kruger area and w3e visit the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre where animals are rehabilitated before being set free back into the wild. Our evening will be an informative village tour and we will watch a fire dancing display by the Shangaan people of the area. These are included activities.

We again overnight at the Marula Camp with all meals included.

Day 14 Panorama Route � Johannesburg

This is the final day of our overland adventure tour and we will travel 600 km to reach our final destination; Johannesburg. Before we leave Timbavati though, we go on a final bush walk just outside the Kruger National Park in the company of a local expert to do some game spotting.

We take the Panorama Route back to Johannesburg and make stops at the Blyde River Canyone and at Bourkes Luck Potholes. It is customary for tour group members to spend the last evening together and have a farewell meal at a restaurant. Meals included today are breakfast and lunch.

Included activities: bush walk at Timbavati and optional activity is dinner out.

Tour Ends

The drop off point is at the Lakes Hotel and please take note that the adventure vehicle does not drive around in Johannesburg making individual drop offs. You must make your own transportation arrangements from the drop off zone.
