In times gone by whales were seen as nothing more than a commercial industry. Today they are seen as gentle and graceful giants that we share our planet with and they readily draw crowds to see them when they gather. Our “rough and tough” forefathers may turn in their graves to see the whale treated with such respect and awe as it is today. However, it is important that we keep the spark of awe alive in a bid to conserve this majestic and mysterious creature of the deep from disappearing from our oceans as it so nearly once did.
Plettenberg Bay is blessed with being a place where whales are easy to find and view; making whale watching boat adventures less of a hassle. When you visit Plettenberg Bay you can opt for whale watching all year round or you can make a point of visiting in peak whale season from June to December.
There are two whale watching boat adventures available to choose from, the Discovery Cruise and the Premium Cruise, each lasting between one and a half and two hours. The Discovery Cruise is popular all year round; it focuses more on viewing dolphins and visiting the Robberg Peninsula seal colony. Whale encounters on this cruise are not uncommon, but the distance for this cruise is restricted to 300m from the whales.
The Premium Cruise is more popular during the peak whale season, but is also available all year round. This cruise focuses on finding and viewing whales, then dolphins and if there is time left make a trip to the seal colony. This whale watching adventure in Plettenberg Bay offers you the opportunity of a lifetime to get up close and personal, within a few feet, of these gentle marine giants, a truly unforgettable experience.
